Soof Embroidery

Soof literally means triangle. Triangle is the basic form and repetition of these triangles are used to embroider stylized floral designs, peacocks & stars. These were traditionally done to convey wishes of fertility and prosperity for the newly weds.

Soof embroidery is done with surface satin stitch from the reverse side of the fabric. This style of embroidery is worked by carefully counting the warp and weft threads and not over a drawn pattern.

Keen eye sight & a fine understanding of geometry are required to produce soof embroidery works. These are generally done on evenly woven cotton fabric as it aids in the counting of threads.

Soof embroidery is done by the Sodha, Rajput & Meghwal communities of Kutchh.

Joanne's Blue Coral has a fine collection of soof embroidered hand woven kala cotton stoles from Kukma in the kutch region.
